Unreal Road Bike Fit

Riding a road bike that doesn't fit you won't just slow you down, it can also lead to a bad back, neck, or knees. Get the right fit by following a few easy steps:

Wearing your normal cycling gear, Set your bike up flat on a fixed trainer. Take a tape measure and measure your inside leg. Start where your thigh meets your crotch, and measure down to the bottom of your heel (minus the shoe sole).
Bike_Fit_1

Take this measurement and multiply it by 109%. The resulting measurement should be the same distance between the top of your saddle and the pedal.

Set the saddle flat, then adjust the angle, with the tip slightly up for men and slightly down for women. Do not adjust the more than 8mm in either direction from the level.

Bike_Fit_2

Pedal long enough to fall into your natural rhythm, then stop with one of your legs at full extension with your foot flat (or just slightly toe-down). At this point, you should have the correct saddle position.

Reach out to the handlebars. You should be upright and comfortable on the tops, while able to move to the tri-bars and brake hoods easily and comfortably. The reach can be adjusted by changing out the stem for a shorter or longer one.

Bike_Fit_4

Spend plenty of time in the drop position, making sure the brakes and gears are accessible. One trick to doing this is to create a horizontal platform from the shoulders of the bars onto the hood of the brake levers. This will allow a comfortable cruising position and access from the drops.

Small-handed riders can use handlebars with reduced sections behind the shifters, or a different profile allowing easier access to the shift levers.

Bike_Fit_3
Bar width can be determined by comparing the measurement across the shoulders. Be sure to measure from the outsides of the bar ends.
Bike_Fit_5
Using a plumb line can help with weight distribution and cleat position. Holding the plumb line at your kneecap, it should drop down through the pedal spindle (move the saddle fore or aft to correct if necessary). The ball of your foot should also be over the pedal spindle.

Unreal now an official Ergomo Dealer!

posted on 07/31/2008

Unreal Cycles is proud to announce we are now carrying the Ergomo power meter system. Ergomo is fast becoming renowned for their innovative cycling power measurement systems. Power measurement has been proven to be the most effective method to assist with your training and racing performance monitoring and data collection. Unfortunately most power based measurement systems are far too expensive for the enthusiast cyclist.Ergomo offers all the exceptional features of other power measurement systems at a realistic price!

What’s so great about the Ergomo? For one thing the Ergomo is extremely lightweight. We recently built up a Genius with an Ergomo that came in under 16 pounds. The same bike with a PowerTap SL would weigh in at over 18 pounds.Essentially, the only weight for the Ergomo is the bottom bracket / sealed bearing unit which weighs about 300 grams; that's comparable to a Campagnolo Record BB.

Aside from its low weight, the Ergomo enables its user to ride any set of wheels he or she prefers. As the Ergomo measures Wattage (and cadence, KCals, and KJoules, incline percentage, current elevation and overall elevation gain) from the bottom bracket instead of from the rear wheel (like PowerTap), wheel choice is entirely open; you can even run a disk, an essential facet for a dedicated time trialist or triathlete.

The Ergomois light, efficient, reliable, and has all the cool factor one could possibly want plus instantaneous readout for your Intensity Factor (IF) and Training Stress Score (TSS), giving you one very cool power meter and very powerful training tool.

The Ergomo bottom bracket spindle is available in Square Taper (Campagnolo), ISIS, or Octalink versions.

Unreal Cycles is proud to announce we've added Soma Fabrications to our stable of great products that we carry.  Soma Fabrications products are practical, durable, comfortable, and affordable.  Soma Fabrications has felt the lack of "real" products aimed at the cyclist and come up with up with ideas and items like a better tire lever, water bottles that don't taste like plastic and don't contain BPAs, and steel frames that get riders smiling from the commute to the single track.
